“Employment of web developers is projected to grow 27 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand will be driven by the growing popularity of mobile devices and ecommerce.”

If you’re considering a career as a web designer or developer, attending a college that offers a web design curriculum  is an excellent way to get started.

If you live in Los Angeles, there are numerous web design and development certificate programs available. Students can choose a program offered by one of the cities major universities, or select a program at a smaller art college, or independent school.

The programs vary considerably in their curriculum, with some emphasizing design, and others development. It’s important to decide which area is of interest before enrolling.

Is formal education in web design important?

The short answer is that in most cases classroom time is important. But, a more complete answer requires knowing the exact area of specialization.

Web design – with the focus on design.

The broad category of web design contains two subcategories: design and development. While the two are often mixed, in many cases a design team will contain dedicated designers, and dedicated developers.

A specialist in design will have mastered concepts the run through all visual communications; use of color, typography, image manipulation, and more.

Of course he or she will also know how to use the graphic tools of the web design trade like Adobe Photoshop and Illustration, as well as applications like Adobe Dreamweaver.

While continually being updated, these tools have been around some time, and many designers have learned them on their jobs, and through self-education.

The benefits of a formal education are still there for designers who are focused on the design side, but they are not as great as for developers.

The WordPress wrinkle

WordPress is the world’s most popular Content Management System because of it’s flexibility and ease of use. WordPress employs themes that give designers a head start as they create and develop a website.

Many third party tools have been develop to streamline, and in some cases, eliminate time consuming tasks associated with other platforms.

If a future web designer plans to work

Web design is more flexible than development, and often is learned on the job, or through self-education. Nevertheless, certification programs generally include training for background skills like typography, and image manipulation – skills that are tough to learn on your own.

The programs give students a chance to learn a variety of design and development options. Self-trained web designers tend to do what they know

Web development on the other hand, is not flexible. It is the technical part of the process, and requires adherence basic building ….
